EUREKA!

Okay gals, I have a huge (well, huge for me) find today... Does anyone here besides me suffer from nails curling inward? If you don't know what I mean, I used my mad photoshop skillz to point out what I mean below:

See how horrible that looks? Well, I found the culprit! And it's ... *drumroll, please* DRY NAILS!

For me specifically, what was making my nails dry was Gelous base coat. I read reviews about it being drying but because I didn't experience peeling, I figured I was just lucky and escaped from the evil clutches of the dryness that Gelous causes. I was WRONG! When your nails curl in like this, it's because they're dry. That's why you'll notice that your nails seem wider when they've been in water. They're like sponges. And it's okay for them to curl a little when they're dry. It's normal, it's supposed to happen. BUT when they curl too much, like in the photos, it's because they're excessively dry. SO ladies, if you experience this, try switching to a moisturizing base coat. If that doesn't work, it could be something more serious, like a vitamin deficiency, but it's better to rule this out first. Also, beware of using pure acetone too often, as that can dry out your nails too.

I just thought I'd share my findings in case anyone else was experiencing the same issues. If I helped at least one person, I'll be satisfied. :)

Did this help you out in any way? Did you already know this? Let me know! Have a wonderful weekend, ladies! I'll be posting tomorrow with some supah classy nails :)

  1. This was a very interesting post! My nails always seem to be wider at the tip (well on some nails). I wonder what that means. I am going to share this post on my Facebook just in case anyone else is having this problem. Thanks so much for sharing.

  4. Yup I knew. Water is the only thing that penetrates into the nail and hydrates it.
I've never had a problem with dry nails so far.

  5. Oh and nails do start to curl when they are really long. It is natural, and might not be caused by dry-ness.

  6. Big thank you, I thought it must be just me and the way my nails grow. I know I do not drink enough good ole fashioned water which also affects the body so maybe this causes the nails to dry out as well! Will really try to drink more water and keep a watch on the nails at the same time

    @ Shopping Addict: I'm glad I helped :)

@ Ida Pie: Thanks for sharing that info; I just wanted to help anyone out just in case their issue could be solved by using more moisturizing products. At least they'll be able to rule this out, if their nails continue to curl. :)

@ loberry: You're very welcome :) I began drinking more water too, and my nails are appreciating it a lot :) Glad I was able to help! :D

  9. Some of it is genetics as well- depending on how long you have your nails. Some people's nails curl when they are too long.

@ Fingers: Thanks for sharing that too, now we know that if using a moisturizing base coat doesn't work, it's just that they're too long :)
